God Loves You

I started this week sitting with God and writing a series of devotionals drawn from different themes in Scripture. One focused on God’s holiness, another on the schemes of the enemy, and another on God’s heart for justice. These are all important topics, but as I continued sitting with God in reflection, He placed a different word on my heart, one He wanted me to bring to your attention today.

It is a simple phrase, yet mighty in power: “God loves you.”

If you are human and know anything about God, then this truth is for you: you are at the center of God’s love. Yet, because of our sin nature, there are moments when, even though we know God loves us and have even experienced His love, we still doubt in our hearts that His love is enough. And if you’re anything like I used to be, it can be hard to grasp why God loves you at all.

For that reason, God wants to speak for Himself: the what, why, when, and how of His love. So go with me to John 3:16. Yes, it may be one of the most quoted verses in the entire Bible, and for good reason. But today, we’re going to slow down and walk through it, allowing the weight of God’s Word to settle deeply.

John 3:16 (NIV) reads: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Let’s walk through this:

  • “For” – This word introduces a reason. It points to the explanation behind God’s action.

  • “For God so loved” – Here we see that God's love is the motivation. “So loved” expresses the depth, intensity, and greatness of that love.

  • “the world” – This tells us who God loved. The world. People. Humanity. And yes, you. You can even insert your own name here: For God so loved [your name]. Because that’s how personal His love is.

  • “He gave” – Love moved God to do something. He demonstrated His love through action. He gave. He didn’t withhold. He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t negotiate.

  • “His one and only Son” – This is the gift. The most precious gift God could give. “His Son” shows ownership, value, and relationship. God gave the One who belonged to Him, His very heart, for you.

Pause and let that settle in. God gave His only Son to express His love for you. Not just in words but through action. He gave freely, without asking anything in return. That is a God who loves unconditionally, with no strings attached and no hidden motives. It could have said, “For God so loved Himself that He gave,” but instead scripture reveals the truth. God loved you so deeply and so personally that He willingly gave His Son for you.

Even more interesting, God doesn’t have to try to love. He is love. The Bible refers to this as Agape, the highest and purest form of love. Agape is God’s immeasurable, incomparable love for humankind. It’s more than emotion. More than sentiment. Agape love is active. It moves. It gives. It sacrifices. And in John 3:16, we witness the greatest act of love ever known to man.

Even as I write this, I am still learning to fully comprehend it myself. But just like someone who truly loves you shows that love through their actions, God’s love moved Him to give something to you, and for you, just to say He loves you.

Prayer

God, thank you that you love us so deeply that you offered your Son, Jesus, as a living sacrifice. You cared for us so much that You freely gave us the best gift and expression of Your love. Thank You that You are kind and loving, and You express to us always that You care for us. May we never forget Your love for us, and may we always remember how Your love is sufficient for us. It is all we will ever need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
