Run Toward The Lord

Last week, I went to the beach. It was truly the highlight of my week. It is by far one of my favorite places to relax, think, and listen to the endless sound of the waves. I am so grateful to God for this piece of His creation here on earth.

While standing there, the Lord began to speak to me through my own words, a line from a poem in my book, Fruitful Tree:

“At the edge of fear, we run towards the Lord.”

The phrase echoed in my mind over and over. Was God reading my thoughts? I guess He knew my inner world was spinning at 100 mph. I took a deep breath and let Him speak more deeply into my heart.

When we face anxiety, difficult decisions, or internal battles, it is often easier to run away from God than toward Him. We quickly push past the patience and waiting stage and head straight into survival mode before we ever acknowledge God.

As I reflected a little deeper, the Lord brought to mind the Bible passage where Peter steps onto the water (Matthew 14:28–31). When Jesus called him, Peter stepped out in faith. But the moment he shifted his focus to the wind and waves around him, he began to sink. This is very important to note because here we see that what we focus on drives our movement, and what we put our trust in determines our direction.

Scripture also consistently speaks about our spiritual posture as we navigate life:

  1. Isaiah 40:31reminds us that those who wait on the Lord will run and not grow weary.

  2. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that while a man plans his way, the Lord directs his steps.

  3. Hebrews 12:1–2urges us to run with endurance the race set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.

What matters most is keeping our eyes fixed on God and moving in His direction, regardless of how uncertain the path may seem.

I challenge you this week to reflect on where you tend to run when life feels overwhelming. Is your default response to turn to your phone, work, friends, or self-reliance?

Ask God to guide your steps toward Him. When fear, fatigue, or sadness creep in, choose to run to Him rather than away. Like Peter taking his first step onto the water, fix your eyes on Jesus and move forward in faith, without hesitation.

Prayer:

Lord, help the person reading this week to keep their eyes stayed on You. May You calm them, and as they answer You, You will begin to order their steps. Remove confusion, distractions, and self-reliance from them, and show them that You are worthy and honorable enough to be trusted with even the smallest of things. May You listen to their troubles this week and calm their anxious hearts if fear tries to arise. I ask that you give them a willing spirit so that they can continue to move forward in You, running the race set before them. In Jesus' name, Amen.
