One of the hardest decision in our walk with God is not about what we do for Him, but about what we believe about Him. This question will test our faith beyond measure. It may keep us awake at night, pondering and reflecting deeply. It will sit with us, etching itself into our being, all rooted in just one question.
This is the exact question we see asked in Matthew 16:13-15 and later reflected in Mark 8:29 and Luke 9:20. Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" (Matthew 16:13 NIV)
At a glance, this seems to focus on the larger population, as the word "people" indicates a general reference. The disciples respond, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." (Matthew 16:14 NIV)
Then Jesus makes the question personal. He looks at Peter, one of His twelve disciples and a close friend who would later become a primary leader among the apostles. He asks him, "But what about you? Who do you say I am?" (Matthew 16:15 NIV)
I love how Jesus addresses not only Peter’s intellectual understanding but also his heart. Sometimes we need to pause and ask ourselves this question, more than once, because as we mature in Christ, this question will tug at our hearts repeatedly.
It can be easy to go through life thinking that Jesus is just a healer. But until we find ourselves in desperate need of healing, we may not fully realize that Jesus is our healer. Our belief in Jesus can't be something we simply rehearse on Sundays or when it's convenient. It must be unwavering, steadfast reassurance to our souls that He alone is all we need and is who He claims to be.
I challenge you this week to write down what you believe God to be to you or what you are currently needing Him to be in this season. As you reflect on this, find a Bible verse that highlights these characteristics, and pray over it throughout the week.
Prayer:
God, I pray for the person who needs You to be exalted in their life in a mighty way this week. May You increase their faith as they lean on and depend on You to be all they need and ever ask for. May You shower them with favor and mercy, guiding them to know You better and leading them to eternal life. Continue to walk with them, revealing Your goodness and faithfulness as a Father and friend. May their hearts be stirred to desire You more deeply in this season. In Jesus' name, Amen.
